Supplementing Cows and Calves on Fall Pasture

10/01/2024

Summer is waning, and Fall is here. Time to assess pasture conditions to decide on the best way to maximize Calf gains and Mother cow body condition as we move toward Calf weaning and winter maintenance of Cows.

Many pastures had substantial plant growth during the wetter part of early summer, and there has been significant re-growth of some forage species recently. This resource is a valuable asset to help delay the cost and effort of winter feeding.

The older mature forage can be utilized by the cow as an effective energy source if she can get her rumen degradable protein requirements met. We are pleased to announce we are also now a dealer for New Generation Feeds and offer the Smartlic line of low moisture supplement Lick Tubs.

For fall grazing of mature forages we recommend the NE 30 tub that will supply the cattle with a great source of available protein to fuel the rumen and enhance forage digestion, while maintaining their macro and trace mineral nutrient requirements.
